How to Clean and Care for Your Bar Accessories (So They Last for Years)
Bar tools meet sugar, citrus acid, and salt every time you use them — all of which corrode and dull metal if left to sit. A little routine care keeps them shiny, hygienic, and rust-free for years.
Clean right after use
Sugar and citrus residue are the enemies of a clean bar. Rinse and wash tools immediately after mixing, before anything dries on. A quick wash in the moment saves hard scrubbing — and prevents sticky shakers that seize shut.
Wash by material
- Stainless steel: warm soapy water, then dry at once to prevent water spots.
- Copper-plated: hand-wash only; polish occasionally and avoid abrasives that strip the plating.
- Matte black coated: gentle sponge only — scouring pads scratch the finish.
- Glass: wash carefully; check for cracks before each use.
- Wood (muddlers, coasters): hand-wash, never soak, and dry fully to prevent splitting.
Dry thoroughly — every time
- Water left in a shaker or on a strainer is what causes spotting and rust.
- Hand-dry with a soft cloth rather than air-drying.
- Leave the shaker open to air out before storing.
Store and maintain
- Store tools dry and loosely — not sealed damp in a drawer.
- Don't put quality or coated tools in the dishwasher unless rated for it.
- Replace worn shaker seals and check muddlers for splinters.
Bottom line: Wash off sugar and citrus right after use, clean each material the right way, and dry thoroughly every time — that's how your bar accessories stay rust-free, leak-proof, and beautiful for years.
