How to Use Your Bar Tools to Mix Better Drinks at Home
Owning the tools is step one — using them properly is what makes the drink. These fundamentals will instantly sharpen your home cocktails.
Step 1: Measure every time
Even experienced bartenders measure. Use the jigger for every pour — a balanced cocktail is about ratios, and "eyeballing" is the fastest way to a drink that's too sweet, too strong, or flat. Consistency comes from measuring.
Step 2: Shake vs. stir — know which
- Shake drinks with juice, dairy, or egg — about 10–15 seconds until the shaker frosts over.
- Stir spirit-only drinks (like a Negroni or Martini) to keep them clear and silky.
- Shaking adds chill, dilution, and aeration; stirring chills gently without clouding.
Step 3: Mind your ice
- Use fresh, large, solid ice — it chills fast and dilutes slowly.
- Small or wet ice melts quickly and waters down the drink.
- Always shake or stir with ice, then strain over fresh ice to serve.
Step 4: Muddle gently
When using herbs like mint, press and twist gently to release the oils — don't pulverize them, or you'll pull out bitter notes. For fruit and sugar, a firmer muddle is fine.
Step 5: Strain and garnish
Use the strainer to keep ice and pulp out of the glass, then finish with a garnish that matches the drink — a citrus twist, a sprig of mint, an olive. Presentation is part of the taste.
